Alvin M. Kobes, son of Leonard and Mattie (Kastanek) Kobes was born near Friend, NE on March 22, 1924. He attended Rural School District 57 near his home and graduated from the 8th grade. He helped with the farming and enjoyed automotive mechanics. He was a former member of the 2CBJ Lodge Saline Center.
Alvin married Marjorie Hohensee on September 23, 1945 at St. John's Evangelical and Reformed Church in Western. On October 16, 1945, he was drafted into the United States Army at Fort Lewis, Washington and then served in the Army of Occupation near Seoul, Korea. After his discharge, he was employed at the Dempster Windmill Factory in Beatrice. He returned to farming near Wilber. He worked as a mechanic at Wilber Motors, Altman Garage, Schnert Garage in Dorchester, and Rehm Implement in DeWitt. Alvin enjoyed driving the Thrifty Nickel route for over twenty-five years.
He was a member of the American Legion Post #101 in Wilber and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4959 in Crete. He served on the School Board in District 97 and was a volunteer at the Wilber Czech Museum for several years.
Alvin was a member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Wilber for over 60 years. He served on the church council for a number of years including the time when the current church building was planned and erected. He and Marjorie faithfully attended services and were active in church activities. His Christian faith and beliefs were strong. He put them into practice and passed them on to his family.
Throughout life, his family was the highest priority for him, and he cherished every family get together. His sense of humor brought joy and laughter to young and old at each gathering. To the very end of his life, he took a caring, paternal and selfless interest in each one of his children, grandchildren, great and great great grandchildren. He always wanted to know what they were doing and how they were getting along. He will be sorely missed by all.
He is survived by daughters Sandra Morton (Christopher) of Swansea, Wales; Marcia Dvorak (Ron) of Overland Park, KS; Connie Fishburn (Alan) of Wilber, NE; and son, Alvin Dean Kobes (Geri) of Elkhorn, NE; brother Bernard Kobes (Delores); brother-in-law Marvin Hohensee (Joyce); 13 grandchildren: Sarah (Neil) Davis; Geraint (Elizabeth) Morton; Emlyn (Lucy) Morton; Rhys (Victoria) Morton; Michelle (Michael) Mason; Ray (Reagen) Brown; Jared Brown; AJ (Justin) Fulbright; Garrie (Steffany) Kobes; Tony Gordon; Owen, Grant, and Jack Kobes; 16 great grandchildren: Manon and Mared Davis; Abigail, Thomas, and Catrin Morton; Iestyn and Alys Morton; Zachary and Madison Mason; Alyssa and Ashlynn Brown; Brandi and Alex Brown; Gage and Zoey Fulbright; and Mason Kobes; and two great great grandchildren Braxton and Khloe Mikkelsen; sisters-in-law Dorothy Vorderstrasse and Irene Stewart; nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were parents, wife Marjorie Kobes; father and mother-in-law, Henry and Ella Hohensee; daughter Debra Gordon; sister Evelyn Slama; brothers- and sisters-in law.
Funeral Services will be 2:00 PM on Tuesday, September 13, 2016 at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Wilber with Reverend Travis Panning officiating. Visitation with family greeting friends Monday 5-8 PM at Kuncl Funeral Home, Wilber. Interment at Wilber Czech Cemetery. Memorials to the church. Condolences may be left at kunclfh.com.
