Obituary

Barbara (BJ) Leavitt, a beloved mother, wife, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 16, 2025, at the age of 70, in her hometown of Lincoln, Nebraska. Born on January 9, 1955, BJ brought joy and warmth to those around her, living a life rich in love, service, and creativity.

Barbara was the daughter of Lemol Montgomery and Roberta Ada Bartzatt. She was preceded in death by her loving parents as well as her siblings.  BJ is survived by her devoted husband, George Arthur Leavitt, whom she married on June 18, 1978, in Lincoln, Nebraska, and together they shared a beautiful life for nearly five decades. She is also cherished by her daughter, son, four granddaughters, two sisters, one brother, and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews who will carry her spirit forward.

A proud graduate of Lincoln High in 1973, Barbara went on to earn her degree in Sociology and Psychology from Doane College in 1977. Her educational background laid the foundation for a career that was as diverse as it was fulfilling. While BJ held many different jobs throughout her life, she found her true calling in working as an activity aide and director at Milford Nursing Home and Tabitha in Lincoln. Her compassion and dedication to enriching the lives of the elderly were hallmarks of her character and touched many lives.

BJ was an active member of the community, engaging in numerous organizations and initiatives. She was a Girl Scout leader, a Boy Scout leader, and a dedicated Sunday school teacher at the First Congregational UCC Church. Her commitment to serving others extended to her work as a Red Cross volunteer, where she trained individuals in First Aid and CPR and assisted in fire and disaster response efforts.

In her personal life, BJ was an avid pet lover, and her home was filled with the warmth of her beloved animals. She had a passion for crafts and anything artistic, often expressing her creativity through stunning murals that she painted at Tabitha and other skilled nursing facilities. A testament to her boundless imagination, she famously created beautiful paper flower bouquets for her daughter's wedding and crafted intricate 3D paper animals for the Lincoln Humane Society Auction, showcasing her generous spirit and love for her community.

Those who knew BJ described her as outgoing and generous, qualities that made her a beloved figure among family and friends. Her laughter, creativity, and zest for life were infectious, and she had a unique ability to make everyone feel special and valued.

A celebration of BJ's life will take place on July 28, 2025, at 10:30 AM at the First Congregational UCC Church.
