Deryl Lee Sysel was born on September 20, 1947 at Lincoln General Hospital to George and Elsie (Kraus) Sysel. He was baptized in 1974 at the First Lutheran Church in Lincoln. Deryl married Karen Kay Hagelstein on November 16, 1974 at First Lutheran Church in Lincoln. To this union they had one daughter, Debra Kay. He lived in Saline County, Monroe precinct all of his life; living in section 23 until 1955, then moving to section 22, where he lived until his death. Deryl started school at age 4 at District 45. In 1955, his family moved to section 22 where he went to District 94. He graduated from Dorchester Public School in 1965 and then attended Southeast Community College in Milford from 1967 – 1969 where he took auto mechanics. From 1967 – 1973, Deryl was in the Army National Guard, Crete, Nebraska where he worked in supplies and obtained the rank of Sargent. Deryl was a farmer at heart. He loved working the fields and raising cattle, pigs and Shetland ponies, and did some trapping too. He started driving a tractor at age 7. He always helped his dad farm. In 1969, he rented some ground south of Friend from Wally and Vivian Johnson and began farming on his own. He liked to square dance at Rural Youth. He belonged to the Lads and Lassies 4-H Club, was a member of the Saline Center Lodge, the Crete Young Farmers, and the Nebraska Farmers Union. He served on the ASCS County Committee for several years and was Treasurer of School District 57. Deryl enjoyed attending family events and getting together with friends. He loved to show Landon and Connor the farm equipment and take them for tractor and combine rides and playing games together. Deryl will also be remembered for being good with numbers and dates, for calling Dorchester "Dog Stretcher", and to always ask for his senior citizen discount when going out to eat. He was preceded in death by his grandparents: Joe and Lillian (Vavra) Sysel, Joe and Lena (Leuben) Kraus, his parents: George and Elsie Sysel, father and mother in law: Kenneth and Delores (Heiser) Hagelstein, and nephew: Brad Kasl. Survivors include his wife: Karen Sysel, daughter and son in law: Debra and Nate Shaw of Friend, grandsons: Landon and Connor Shaw of Friend, twin sister and brother in law: Cheryl and Joe Mares of Friend, niece: Sheri Kasl of Dorchester, special friend: Dale Lawver of Friend, and a host of cousins and friends. Funeral service: 11:00 A.M. Monday, February 21, 2022 at Dorchester United Methodist Church. Visitation: Sunday February 20 from 10 - 6 with family receiving friends 3 - 6 at Kuncl Funeral Home in Crete, NE. Memorials are in care of the family for future designation. Arrangements entrusted to Kuncl Funeral Home in Crete.
