Douglas A Herndon, age 67 of Crete, NE passed away on January 14, 2024 at his home surrounded by family. Doug had been suffering from a form of Parkinson's for the last 2 and a half years. He was born on September 1, 1956 in Red Cloud, NE to William & Doris Herndon. Doug was their second child. Doug's family moved around quite often therefore Doug attended several elementary schools. By the time he was around 12 years old the family had settled in Crete, NE. He went on to graduate from Crete High School. After high school Doug went to work for Alpo which is now Nestlé Purina. He worked there from about the age of 18 until he retired at the age of 65. Over the years he worked in nearly every department and was extremely loyal and dependable. Doug had many creative interests outside of work. He was an artist with talents in sketching and leather craft. He was an avid motorcycle enthusiast, taking many trips on the open road. His zest for adventure and learning lead him to such activities as martial arts, skiing, scuba diving, marathon running, camping, and parasailing. His desire for adventure took him to Japan where he met the love of his life, Rieko. They would go on to be married June 14, 1996 in Lincoln, NE. They made their home in Crete, Ne. Doug is survived by his wife, Rieko Herndon of Crete, NE; stepdaughter, Rika and (Tsuyosi) Miyazato; stepson, Ryuji and (Natsuko) Oshiro; five step granddaughters; and two step grandsons of Japan; his father, William C. Herndon of Crete, NE; his brother, Ron and (Pat) Herndon of Colorado Springs, CO; his sister, Barb and (Hani) Shafai of Rapid City, SD; his nephew, Scott and (Maria) Herndon, his nephew, Brett and (Delilah) Herndon, and his niece, Carrie Herndon, of Colorado Springs, CO; his niece, Yasmeen Shafai and nephew, Sharaf Shafai, of Rapid City, SD; and three grandnephews and two grandnieces of Colorado Springs, CO. Doug was proceeded in death by his mother, Doris Herndon. Memorial services are being planned for May 25, 2024 at 1:00 pm at the Atlanta Cemetery of Saline County, NE.
