Edward R. Schigas, 83, of Crete, NE, passed away on March 30, 2020 in Lincoln, NE. He was born on January 10, 1937 in Erie, Pennsylvania to Michael and Anna Schigas. Ed enlisted with the military in his early years and served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Boston. He was on active duty in the Mediterranean and later received his Honorable Discharge in 1966. Ed took great pride in his career with General Electric. He initially worked as a locomotive machinist, then as a field service engineer for locomotives, and lastly, held a supervisory position with GE until his retirement in 1997. During his career he received a number of distinguished awards and recognitions for his work. Ed enjoyed fishing, golfing, politics and was very patriotic. He had a love for vehicles, especially Jeeps and big beautiful trucks. He liked trains and loved all types of music. Ed was a very kind and generous man, as he often supported different charitable causes, especially those that helped children and veterans. He is loved and will be missed by many, including his family and friends from the close-knit neighborhood he was a part of while living in Crete. He is survived by his son and daughter in law: Mark and Mary Ellen, grandchildren: Joe and Julia, and a brother: Joe. A private Funeral Mass will be held for Edward at Sacred Heart Church in Crete. Interment will take place in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to Kuncl Funeral Home in Crete.
