Evelyn (Stirba) Hermsmeier Rahe, age 100, of Wilber, formerly of DeWitt, Nebraska, died January 1, 2022. She was born February 22, 1921 near Wilber. When Evelyn was 3, her parents moved to a farm east of Swanton. She attended Swanton High and then continued her education at Peru State Teachers College and the University of Nebraska at Lincoln where she received a Master's Degree. During her 43 years of enjoyable teaching, she worked with hundreds of students and parents. She participated in and also entered her students in many talent and music presentations. Her life was devoted to the teaching of children and enjoying her family. Evelyn taught school in Southeast Nebraska, Valentine, Nebraska and Bakersfield, California, primarily at the fifth grade level. She retired after teaching 17 years in Beatrice at Stoddard Elementary School.
Evelyn loved music, playing and composing Country Western and Czech songs. The Leonard Becwar Band recorded her composition, "Golden Heart". She is known for playing the accordion with several local bands throughout the community and her involvement in organizing and playing in the Accordion Jamboree at Czech Days. She looked forward to participating in Czech Days events and riding on a float in the parades.
Evelyn organized family gatherings and cousin reunions. Her son, Gary brought her much cherished happiness. Survivors include her son and daughter in law: Gary and Karen Hermsmeier, grandson: Kevin (Jacqueline Griffith) Hermsmeier, granddaughter: Alicia (Joseph) Webb, 4 great granddaughters, step-daughter Bonnie Litten, two step granddaughters, many step great grandchildren and Dr. Christopher (Peggy) Heinrichs, Gary's childhood friend who was like a son to Evelyn.
She was preceded in death by her parents: Adam and Emma (Sasek) Stirba, sisters: Ida Pospisil, Twins Ella Vacek and Sylvia Pospisil, brothers: Joseph and William Stirba, Sr, as well as by husbands Kenneth R. Hermsmeier and Marvin H. Rahe as well as beloved nieces and nephews.
Evelyn's wishes were to donate her body to the Anatomical Board of the State of Nebraska. No services at this time. Memorials to DeWitt Fire and Rescue. Kuncl Funeral Home in Wilber is in charge of arrangements.
