Obituary

Frances S. (Blum) Obosla, age 98 years, formerly of Crete slipped the surly bonds of earth April 24, 2018 at Haven Manner-Hickman where she resided since October 2016. Frances graduated from Lincoln High in June 1938 and for two years while in high school and three years following graduation "Frankie" as she was known by teammates, played 3rd base for a Women's Softball Association team in Lincoln. They're last sponsor was Nebraska Neon and they played at Lincoln Muni Field and at surrounding towns almost every night of the week. She enjoyed the team member's luncheons over the years. It is believed Frances was the longest living team member. Her love of dancing took her to the Playmor Ballroom where she met her future husband on a blind date. She and Milan "Marv" Obosla were married June 22, 1946, after "Marv" returned from the war. They located in Chicago, Milan's hometown, where she worked for Allstate Insurance while Milan traveled as a Construction Supervisor setting up Walgreen Stores. They also helped care for Milan's elderly Mother. Frances later traveled coast to coast with Milan on his job always with a faithful schnauzer called Duke. Frances wanting to return to Nebraska and the Crete area where she had enjoyed her childhood with relatives convinced Milan in 1972 to move to Crete where she cared for her ailing Aunt Frieda until her death. Marv retired from Walgreens in 1983. Following Milan's death in 1991, Frances moved into an apartment, kept busy caring for the neighborhood cats, knitting and watching her beloved "Chicago Cubs" baseball games on TV. She was well read and had strong opinions on local, state and national issues. Frances was a fantastic cook, always willing to share her many recipes, but mostly she was a loving caring friend to many, visiting those housebound and in Nursing Homes, and living life to its fullest. She said many times, "I've had a good ride, good family and friends, a loving husband and wonderful life living in Crete, NE. Frances was a proud member of "The Greatest Generation"; member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Crete; American Legion Auxiliary 0147, VFW Ladies Auxiliary 4959 and Crete Senior Citizens. Survivors include sister-in-law Betty Obosla Mauter, Illinois; her father's daughter, Georganne Blum, Lincoln; nieces, nephews and cousins; her special friends Diane and Ron Safranek; and friends Jo Vrtiska, Shirley Matticks and Nona Schultz. Preceded in death by her one and only husband Milan "Marv" Obosla, parents Ida and George Blum, many good friends especially Marie and Babe and newest friend at the Manor, Patty and her faithful schnauzers all named "Duke". At Frances's request cremation with Graveside Services, Lincoln Memorial Wednesday, May 2, 2018 at 10:30 am. Everyone meet at Gate 2.
