Glenn Harry "Gunner" Prochaska was born to James and Bessie Prochaska on January 7, 1924 on the family farm in Lancaster County Nebraska. He was delivered by his father as his two older sisters played in the grainery, adding kernels of wheat to their small hems to create a hoop skirts. He overcame many obstacles in his younger years including high fevers and polio. His father lovingly nicknamed him "Cap". He contracted polio at the age of 13 and with assistance from his father was able to beat this ailment by being tied to the back of a vehicle, forcing him to move his legs or be drug. He eventually was able to get his legs moving again which freed him from walking with crutches for the rest of his life.
It was during this polio ailment that he was given a button accordion to play because he was bedridden, unable to walk. He was left handed and that is why he learned to play the accordion upside down...using his left hand on the keyboard. He grew up and worked diligently on the family farm with his 7 siblings and eventually purchased the farm in 1970 from his parents after his father retired from farming. He attended country school in Lancaster County and Parochial school at St James in Crete. Glenn was the last surviving child in his family.
He married Eileen Keller in November of 1943. Three children were born of this union; Beverly Ann, Robert Glenn, and Glenda Loy. He donned the name "Gunner" from his father in law, Ed Keller when Ed saw him gunning the car as he was leaving the park one day and the name stuck.
He married Mattie Marie McEwen, Ley, Beauvais in July of 1957. Of this union two children were born; Linda Sue and Donna Marie. Three boys were brought into the family with Mattie. These three were; Jack Roy, Ted Elton and Lyle Ray Beauvais. He gave all four boys the opportunity to farm their own ground. All of his children learned how to work hard on the farm.
He raised hogs and cattle till he and Mattie had their first born. Their daughter was highly allergic and he had to get rid of his prize hogs. He thoroughly enjoyed and loved working his cattle and raising crops. He went on to use his musical talents all through life, playing gigs all over Nebraska, South Dakota, Iowa, Kansas and Oklahoma. He even had a successful unplanned gig on a trip to New Orleans playing in a little Bijou Bar. He made many friends in the band business and kept them throughout his life.
Four of Glenn's children followed in his footsteps and played accordion. He was well known in the Lancaster-Saline area for his corn shelling. Glenn owned a Minneapolis Moline sheller that he had "fine-tuned" and held the record for most bushels shelled in one day. It was over 9850 bushels.
In 2013 he was asked to pose as "Mr. February" for the 2014 Kramer Legends calendar. He gladly accepted and posed with his accordion. His wife, Mattie, proudly wore a T shirt boasting she was the wife of Mr. February.
Many cold winter evenings were spent playing Fuchs with his cherished friends at Kramer Hall. Glenn was very proud of the relationships that were shared with neighboring farmers and their families near and around Kramer.
He is survived by his children; Beverly (Don) Saulters, Glenda (Terry) Haas, Lyle Beauvais, Linda Sue (Eric) Placek and Donna (Kenneth) Kastanek, daughter in laws, Joan Beauvais and Janet Jeffries, 19 Grandchildren, 23 Great Grandchildren and 5 Great-Great Grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, sons; Robert, Jack and Ted and siblings.
