Obituary

Harold Wayne Jones, 81, of Crete, passed away peacefully May 6, 2017, surrounded by family. Harold was born August 31, 1935, in Lincoln to Harold C. Jones and Goldie (DeMaranville) Jones. Harold attended Northeast High School and graduated in 1953.

Harold married Carol Ann Colby, July 14, 1957. To this union were born four children: Terri, Kevin, Jeff and Stacey. In 1958 he was drafted into the army for 2 years and returned to make Crete his home. Harold worked as a mechanic at Applebee's Chevy garage in Crete and was later promoted to the service manager. In 1964 he started work at Nebraska Public Power District's Sheldon Station in Hallam and held various positions until he retired after 26 years. In his free time, he had a side business called Jonesy's Upholstery and Trim where he reupholstered a variety of different items.

Harold was tireless in his community service and advocacy in his varied volunteer roles. He served on the Planning Commission for over 40 years and took care of many maintenance issues for his church. In 1995 he received the Sertoma Service to Mankind Award. He was actively involved in Operation LifeSaver where he contributed his service to educating others about the safety around railroad tracks.

Harold's passion for trains and began at a very young age and remained constant throughout his entire life. His collection began with toy Lionel trains and grew to include the depot from Dewitt, a Burlington caboose, a WWII Troop Train Kitchen car, track inspection cars, a velocipede, numerous signals, signs, china and other memorabilia. His greatest joy came from the Burlington Northern mini-train that he used at Camp Quality, parades, and other events.

Camp Quality (cancer camp for kids) was an integral part of Harold's life. Spanning over a 25 year period, he took his Burlington Northern mini train to camp for a total of 52 weeks which was equivalent to one year of his life. One of the hardest things he had to do was to give up taking his train to camp.

Harold is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Carol, daughter and son-in-law Terri and Jerry Brown, son and daughter-in-law Jeff and Kathy Jones, daughter Stacey Sanders; and grandchildren Travis (wife Shaila) Coffey, Jacelyn and Kacynn Jones, Todd (Jamie) Coffey, Teri Mielke, several great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his son Kevin and parents.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 9th from 5-8 PM with family greeting friends from 5-6:30 PM at Kuncl Funeral Home in Crete. Burial will be held Wednesday, May 10th, 9 AM at Lincoln Memorial Park, Meet at Gate 2 prior to service. A Celebration Of Life service will be held following at United Church of Christ, First Congregational in Crete at 11 AM. Memorials in lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Camp Quality, 1325 Village Dr, St. Joseph, MO 64506.
