Harriet A.
Schupbach
April 17, 1937 – May 10, 2019
Harriet Ann (Sagehorn) Schupbach was born April 17, 1937 in Beatrice, Nebraska to Theodore and Ida (Uphoff) Sagehorn. She peacefully passed into eternal life in heaven on May 10, 2019. She attended Hallam High School and graduated from Clatonia High School in 1955. She married Dick Messman in 1957 and had five children. The family lived in Lincoln and on an acreage near Hallam. Harriet moved to Crete in 1976 and began work at Davidson Allen Insurance Agency. She was a real estate broker and insurance agent. In addition to her work in the real estate and insurance field, Harriet worked in a library and small-town newspaper and drove a school bus for many years. Harriet married Wayne Schupbach in 1987. They served churches in Crete, Nebraska and the Kansas communities of Ellinwood, Hiawatha, and Fairview. As part of a 1995 sabbatical, they spent six memorable weeks in Japan at the Asian Rural Institute. They returned to Crete in 2004 and in 2017, moved to The Legacy in Lincoln. Harriet was an avid reader and lover of poetry, a gifted musician, and a life-long learner, taking advantage of opportunities to continue her college studies throughout her life. Much of her learning focused on the geography of the Great Plains in both its physical and human aspects. She was particularly interested in the customs of the native cultures and the experiences of the women who settled on the prairies. The knowledge she acquired made her a strong advocate for social justice and sustainable living. Despite her physical limitations, she made every effort to attend as many sports events and activities of her grandchildren as possible. She shared her love of reading, music, and poetry with her family, singing in church choirs, and learning to play the dulcimer. Harriet will be remembered as a loving mother, a hard worker, and someone who made her mark on the world through the people for whom she cared. Harriet is survived by her loving and devoted husband of almost 32 years, Wayne; sister Virginia Schuerman (Ronald) of Hallam, NE, brother Elliott Sagehorn (Ruth) of Ogallala, NE; daughter Laurie Levorson (David) of Crete, NE, son Paul Messman (Blake) of Bethlehem, PA, son Michael Messman (Joanne) of Grimes, IA, daughter Sue Williamson of Rowlett, TX, daughter Linda Hohbein (Michael) of Holland, NE, stepson Ross (Diane) of Cedar Falls, IA and stepson Lance (Michelle) of Lincoln, NE. She was also Grandma to Michael Rodenbough (April), John Levorson; Teddy, Gareth, Tayte, Callen and Treyton Messman; David Messman, Carolyn Pfeifer (James), Libby North (Keaten); Solomon, Sara and Samuell Williamson; Daniel, Trevor and Kevin Hohbein; Owen Schupbach; Harper, Amelia and Camden Schupbach and great-grandchildren Finley and Kai Rodenbough, Caleb and Eli Messman and Maria North. Services will be held at the United Church of Christ in Crete at 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 17, 2019, with visitation Thursday, May 16 from 6:00-8:00 p.m., also at the U.C.C. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Asian Rural Institute, Crete United Church of Christ or First Plymouth Church in Lincoln. Kuncl Funeral Home in Crete is handling arrangements.
