Janice Betty (Cerveny) Sladek, 69, of Crete was born on March 6th, 1947 in Beatrice NE. She was the fourth of six children born to Benjamin and Erma (Chrastil) Cerveny. She died May 17th, 2016 in Crete after a short battle with breast cancer. Janice loved the country life, growing up and residing her entire life on the farm. She loved being outdoors tending to the animals and had a passion for gardening. She enjoyed riding motorcycles, listening to polka music, baking, playing pitch and listening to Elvis.
Janice was known for many things. She drove school bus for Crete Public Schools just short of 36 years and volunteered at Food Net. Janice was a people person who could strike up a conversation with anyone. She always had a smile on her face, infectious laugh and a camera in hand, but she was especially known for her heart of gold. She was humble and kind and always thought of others before herself. Her children and grandchildren meant the world to her.
She attended country school #158 and completed the 10th grade at Sprague/ Martell.
On July 3rd, 1963 she married Gene Sladek. To this union she had five children: Gene (Robin) Sladek of Crete, Dale (Faith) Sladek of Crete, Carla (Chris) Hansmeyer of Hallam, Amy (Alan) Kvasnicka of Wilber and Jennifer (special friend Edward) of Beatrice. She has 14 grandchildren Justin Sladek, Nevin, Jonas, Logan, and Dalena Sladek, Kayla Jones and Arianna Fitzgerald, Bailey and Kaytlin Hansmeyer, Taylor Sladek and Cheyenne, Trevor, Austin and Keith Kvasnicka. She had one great grandchild, Connly Klaus.
Janice is survived by her husband Gene, all her children and spouses, grandchildren and great grandchild, sister Sharon Jelinek of Wilber, brother, Kenneth Cerveny of Kansas City MO, sisters-in-law, Sharon K. Cerveny, Sharon Mae Cerveny of Clatonia, Connie Cerveny of York, many nieces', nephews, and a host of friends.
Janice is preceded in death by her parents Ben and Erma, stepfather Ed Vlasak, brothers Joseph, Franklin, and Robert Cerveny, a niece Cindy Cerveny and nephews Frankie Cerveny and Brad Jelinek.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, May 21, 2016 at Kuncl Funeral Home in Crete. Family requests casual attire please. Visitation will be on Friday 5-8 PM with family greeting friends 6-7:30 PM at the funeral home. Interment Wilber Czech Cemetery in Wilber. Memorials care of the family for future designation.
