J. Marlene Bals (née Siedhoff) died on June 2, 2026, in Lincoln, NE. She was 94 years old. Marlene was born to Henry and Catherine Siedhoff on January 12, 1932 in Crete, Nebraska.
Marlene married John Bals in 1952, and they shared 63 vibrant and loving years together until his passing in 2015. She is preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Joan Stuchlick, in 2024; her parents; her sisters; Lois Heyen and Carol Jones; and her brother Francis Siedhoff.
Marlene is treasured by her surviving children: Mary Jeanne (Bruce) Hart of Peyton, CO; Janet (Tom) Berry of Kamas, UT; Karen (Stephen) Lockhart of Oakland, CA; Diane (Scott) Coddington of Grand Rapids, MI; Shari (Mike) Boshart of Lincoln, NE; and son-in-law, Mike Stuchlik of Lincoln, NE. She is also lovingly remembered by her twelve grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, her sister Jayne Sainz, and her brother John (Betty) Siedhoff.
The Catholic faith was the center of Marlene and John's family life both at Sacred Heart Church and Saint James School. Marlene lived her Catholic faith in an unassuming and selfless way, always putting others before herself. In retirement Marlene’s love for children and her quiet welcoming demeanor led her to volunteer in the pre-school classroom at St. James School.
Marlene cherished her life in Crete and was an active member of the community. She began her career at Crete State Bank, later taking a pause to devote time to raising her children. She returned to work and enjoyed the camaraderie, challenge of learning new skills and the social engagement it provided.
Long-time members of College Heights Country Club, John and Marlene enjoyed league play and countless rounds with family and friends. In their later years they could be seen bumping down the cart path with one grandchild at the wheel and several others hanging off the cart.
For a week every summer Marlene willingly traded the comforts of her home and kitchen for an overloaded 67 Ford Squire Station Wagon. She orchestrated the family adventures and stories that only camping, canoeing, fishing and exploring can deliver. Her good nature and willingness to join any adventure provided the best of memories.
Marlene’s life will be celebrated on July 17, 2026, at Sacred Heart Church in Crete. The Rosary will begin at 10:00 AM followed by a Mass at 10:30 AM. A private interment will be held for immediate family members.
In lieu of flowers, we suggest memorials or donations to an organization dedicated to making the world a better place.
Arrangements entrusted to Kuncl Funeral Home in Crete.
