Obituary

Larry L. Crist, age 79, went to his heavenly home after a short, courageous battle with cancer. A lifelong resident of Crete, Nebraska, Larry was raised in the community he dearly loved and where he attended school. On December 3, 1966, he married Mary Mariska of Dorchester, Nebraska. Together, they built a home on an acreage just outside of Crete, where they raised their three children, Sharry, Carry, and Tarry (TJ).

Larry's lifelong passion for automobiles guided much of his journey. He was a self-taught body man, opening Crist Auto Body Repair in 1970. Known for his meticulous attention to detail, Larry restored and painted numerous cars over the years, garnering awards and even being featured in car magazines. Each of his children received a lovingly restored car for their 16th birthday—a testament to his dedication and skill. Larry's interests reached beyond cars; he restored a Bonanza airplane, featured in The Bonanza Society magazine, earned his pilot's license, and even used his driveway as a landing strip. His thrill for speed was matched by his love of racing and winning with his 1965 GTO and the pride he took when invited to judge national car shows.

Described by Mary as fun-loving, he was dedicated to his family, ensuring they were cared for and creating memories together, including restoring a motorhome and traveling on many family vacations. He generously contributed to charitable organizations and was always willing to lend a hand to friends and family, making sure each project was completed to the highest standard. His craftsmanship also extended to the community; the pinewood derby track he built is still used by Crete Berean Church and the Boy Scouts and stands as just one example of his lasting contributions.

After a fulfilling career, Larry and Mary retired early, spending 30 winters in Texas and traveling throughout the United States in their motorcoach. Golfing also became a beloved retirement pastime, where Larry competed in many tournaments.

Larry's passion for model trains, stemming from when he was just a boy, was a joy he shared with his children, grandchildren and friends, who eagerly awaited his lessons on running the trains. Every Christmas, he looked forward to joining fellow enthusiasts to set up a model train display at Ace Hardware in Crete—delighting countless children and adults. Their joy was his favorite part.

Larry will be remembered for his resourcefulness, his unwavering support of his family and friends, and his ability to tackle any challenge. His legacy lives on in the hearts of all who knew him, and in the many lives he touched with his kindness, talent, and generosity.

He is survived by his loving wife of almost 60 years. His children, Sharry (Dan) Henning, Carry (Julie) Crist, and Tarry/TJ Keller. Grandchildren, Ashley (Jeff) Coenen, Jacqui (Nico) Henning, Jen (Dan) Wittnebel, Josh Crist, Sierra Crist, Isaiah Crist, Ryan (Jessica) Keller, David (Katie) Keller and Leah (Kam) Lenhart. His sister Lois (Jim) Hough. Thirteen great grandchildren and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Lily (Underwood) Crist, his sister and brother-in-law, Janis and Tom McDonald and infant brother Kenneth Crist, grandson, John Horne and two infant great grandchildren.
