LaVern M. (Melichar) Unger was born on March 5, 1926 on a farm near Pleasant Dale, NE to Anton and Annie (Husa) Melichar. She passed away at her home in Crete on September 17, 2018. LaVern graduated from Crete High School in 1943 and obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from Doane College in 1949. She was a member of the Gamma Phi Iota sorority. She and several college friends have stayed in contact with a Round Robin letter. She taught English and History for five years at Wymore, Pleasant Dale, and Crete, before retiring to raise a family. LaVern met Stanley Unger at the Plamor Ballroom and they were married on August 6, 1954. He was a home builder in Crete. They had two daughters, Sharon and Linda. Sadly, Sharon lost her battle with cancer in 1963. Following Stanley's death in 1988, LaVern spent most of her time with Linda, who was a probation officer in Nebraska City. LaVern was a past member of Crete Senior Citizens. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, raising flowers, traveling, playing bingo/pitch, and horse racing. She is survived by her daughter: Linda Unger of Crete, sister in law: Lavina Melichar of Nebraska City, nieces: Marcia and Tom Elder of Imperial, Dianne and Jerry Bender of Nebraska City, and nephew: Byron and Jan Melichar of Crete, plus great nieces and nephews. LaVern was preceded in death by her parents, infant sister, brother: Leonard Melichar, husband, and daughter. Services will be held on Thursday, September 20th, 2018 at 10:30 AM, Kuncl Funeral Home, Crete. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 5 – 8 PM at the funeral home.
