Leonard "Clem"
J. Salda
December 13, 1930 – February 26, 2019
Leonard J. Salda quietly passed away on February 26, 2019, at the age of 88. Leonard Salda was born on December 13, 1930, to Adolf and Anna (Zoubek) Salda of Wilber, Nebraska. He attended country school District #47. Leonard graduated from Wilber High School in 1948. Leonard never married but instead was a staple in the local community and known by many. When in high school, Leonard was known for his ability to imitate Red Skelton as Clem Kadiddlehopper. Initially he was teased by the older boys in school but later the nickname stuck and most people knew Leonard as "Clem." At the age of 21, Leonard joined the U.S. Marine Corps as an Avionics Electronics Technician and was stationed at Camp Pendleton in San Diego, Jacksonville, Florida, and Memphis, Tennessee. He came home from the service and began farming and raising hogs and cattle, a career that lasted until he reached his early 80s. Leonard was a great neighbor and was always willing to help others with their farming needs as they would help him. Leonard was on the Board of Directors for the Wilber Farmer's Coop for 22 years. Leonard was a member of American Legion Louis-Milan Post 101 for 58 years. For numerous years, he helped with the Legion hamburger stand and/or the Legion bingo stand during the annual Wilber Czech Festival in Wilber. He was inducted into the Knights of Blanik in 2001. Leonard sold Fontanelle Seeds to farmers for several years. He was involved playing in the Kramer, Nebraska Fuchs Card Tournament for over 50 years. He started playing when the game was played in the Kramer Tavern before the Kramer Community Hall was built in the late 1960's. He participated in the tournament until he went to the Wilber Care Center. Leonard was always happy and had an endearing, kind spirit. He enjoyed coming to town for a good polka dance and engaging in the consumption of a tasty "Red Frosty." Leonard is survived by his sister, Joyan R. Svancara and 7 loving nieces and nephews, 9 great nieces and nephews and 7 great great nieces and nephews. Leonard was preceded in death by his father Adolf and mother Anna Salda as well as his sister Violet J. Vilda and brothers-in-law, Donald R. Vilda and Joseph F. Svancara. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 5, 2019, at Kuncl Funeral Home, Wilber, with the Rev. Lila Bottolfsen officiating and music provided by Sue Placek and Steve Hergenraber.
