Obituary

Lois P. (Wells) Henning passed away, at the age of 97, at the Tabitha in Crete, Nebraska, on June 28, 2016. Lois, the sixth child of Clarence A. and Rosa H. (Buhrmann) Wells, was born in Peckham, Weld County, Colorado, on April 10, 1919. She returned to Nebraska with her family as a young child and spent her early years on her father's farm in the Highland Precinct in rural Lancaster County. Three of Lois' siblings died at early ages and a fourth was still born. After her father passed away in 1930, Lois continued to live on the farm with her mother and older brother, Glenn. The family continued to farm for a couple of years before losing the land during the Depression. Her mother passed away in 1977.

Lois attended elementary schools north of Crete, the District #11 school in Lancaster County, and another rural school north of the District #11 school. She attended the Sprague-Martell High School for her freshman year of high school staying with her Aunt and Uncle, George and Mary (Buhrmann) Poland. Lois attended Crete High School for her last three years residing one year with a private family in north Crete and the last two with her sister and brother-in-law; Leone and Eddie Vosta. Lois graduated from Crete High in 1937.

Lois married Harold M. Henning in Lincoln, Nebraska, on September 15, 1937. She was baptized and confirmed by Reverend Adolph F. Schrein at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Crete, NE on March 31, 1939. The couple settled in Crete and were blessed with seven children: Merle Wayne, Robert Lee, Dale Harold, Richard James, Joann Marie, Gary Eugene, and Diane Kay. After Harold's death in 1983, Lois continued to live in the family home.

Lois worked for Formfit in Crete for a number of years. In 1962, Lois was hired by Doane College's maintenance department. Her first assignment was in Smith Hall, formerly called Men's Hall. At that time, the maintenance staff actually cleaned each room, scrubbing, dusting, and emptying the garbage. Lois was the only person assigned to the building, and she would work on a different floor everyday. After numerous years in Smith Hall, Lois relocated to the Communications Center, where she remained for 24 years. Her last five years were spent in Perry Campus Center. Lois retired from Doane in 1999 at age 80, well past her normal retirement, after 37 years of full and part-time work at the College.

Lois enjoyed going for walks to town to have coffee with friends and visit, spending time with family and especially Elvis and listening to his music. She also enjoyed hosting family get-togethers. She was a jack of all trades, could fix anything and you could always find her with a tube of super glue.
Lois was preceded in death by her parents, six siblings, husband (Harold), and two children, Merle W. in 1959 and Richard J. in 2015.
She is survived by children and spouses Robert L. and Barbara J. Henning of Green Valley, AZ; Dale H. Henning of Houston, TX; Janet J. Henning of Crete; Joann M. and Fred A. Kozak of Wilber; Gary E. and Debra K. Henning of Crete; and Diane K. and Rodney K. Mundt of Crete; 15 grandchildren and their spouses; 25 great-grandchildren; and many other family members and friends.

Services will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, July 1, 2016 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Crete. Visitation will be on Thursday from 5-7 PM at Kuncl Funeral Home, Crete. Interment will take place at Riverside Cemetery. Memorials care of the family for future designation. Condolences may be left online at kunclfh.com.
