Obituary

Mattie Marie Prochaska was born in Delores Colorado on January 3rd 1928, to Don and Lennie Maye McEwen, the fifth of six children. She attended School in Delores, then Clatsinie, Oregon till the 5th grade when her family returned to Delores. Middle School was in Littleton Colorado and Denver is where she attended and graduated High School.

Mattie would ride her bike or run to school to save money to attend flight classes and follow in the steps of her sisters who were airplane pilots. Her flight instructor decided it a good idea to pick up Mattie after school after she showed up for class in a garbage truck when she hitched a ride. She received her pilots license at the age of 17 and kept her license until her 30's.

Mattie lost her father at a young age. He worked in a Uranium mine in Colorado and died of cancer. She had fond memories of the large ranching operation her father shared with her Uncle. He spoke Ute and Navajo and did many dealings with the local tribes. Her mother would share their table with some of the local Indians when they came around to deal. Mattie loved the outdoors and spent much time exploring as a child. This life style ceased after her father passed. Taxes took everything they owned.

Mattie married Frederick Ley and from this union, Jack Roy and Ted Elton were born. Fred was killed in an auto accident and Mattie went on to sell magazines to support her and her two boys. During this time she met and married Roy Beauvais, a salesman, and from this union they had a son, Lyle Ray. Roy adopted Jack and Ted and they eventually moved to Nebraska and settled in Lincoln. The marriage ended and Mattie waited tables and worked hard to support her three boys. A coworker, Vera, moved in to help make ends meet. This would become the beginning of a lifelong friendship.

Glenn and Mattie started to date shortly afterwards. The relationship was getting very serious and Mattie introduced her roommate, Vera, to Glenn's roommate, Bob. It wasn't long after this that both couples married and began long successful lives together. Mattie still had a half of a silver certificate given to her on New Years Eve, the year before her and Glenn married, from Bob. Bob's daughter still has the half given from Mattie. It was a symbol of friendship between the two.

Two girls were born from this union, Linda Sue and Donna Marie. She was also blessed with three step children, Beverly Ann, Robert Glenn and Glenda Loy. Mattie emersed herself in the farm life outside of Crete. She gardened, canned, butchered chickens and did whatever else was needed in those hard times. She took sewing classes and read every book she could get her hands on. Her husband, Glenn, needed help in the field and she hopped on the tractor and field cultivated with his front mount field cultivator. This was the first time operating a tractor for her. She hauled grain during harvest, always a book in hand for the long lines at the elevator.

She eventually took an interest in doing his farm books and in the late 60's started taking classes from H&R Block. She passed exams and received her CTP and opened a joint business with Genevive Vlasin. After Gen Vlasin was injured in a car accident, Mattie went on to run a successful tax business on her own. Eventually her daughter Sue and Verna Louch became partners in the business and are still running it today.
