With quiet grace and a life marked by steady care and community, Melonie Ann Moser brightened the world for more than seven decades. Born on August 26, 1953, Melonie entered life with intellectual disabilities that presented unique challenges in an era when support systems were scarce. In 1959, when public schools offered no special-needs programs, her parents faced a heartbreaking decision after a shortened year of kindergarten proved overwhelming for the teacher. With courage and love, they enrolled her at the Martin Luther Home in Beatrice, Nebraska, where she lived and grew up until the age of 18. In 1971 Melonie stepped into a new chapter with the newly formed Region V program in Beatrice. A few years later she moved with the same supportive network to Crete. For 55 years—through the evolution of Region V into what is now known as Apace—she remained part of this caring community, primarily making her home in group residences. There she was surrounded by dedicated staff, friends, and the everyday rhythms of shared life that brought routine, connection, and dignity. Though the world of her early years lacked the resources families take for granted today, the people who walked beside her—first her parents, then the devoted caregivers and companions at Martin Luther Home and Apace—created a circle of acceptance that allowed her to live fully and safely for a lifetime. Her long years in these supportive settings stand as a testament to the difference compassionate community can make.

Family was the center of Melonie’s world. Nearly every conversation turned to her family and of course her cousins. She loved Jesus deeply and spoke of her faith with simple joy. For more than forty years she shared a special bond with her boyfriend, Calvin—a relationship that brought her lasting happiness. Music filled her days. As a girl she adored Pat Boone, then Bobby Sherman, and later “the King,” Elvis Presley. In the late 1990s she discovered Brad Paisley and never looked back; he became her “One and Only,” though she treasured all country music. She attended numerous Brad Paisley concerts with friends and family. She especially loved singing with the Crete Apace Singers Choir.

She also participated in Special Olympics for many years, competing in the long jump. She took pride in every event and enjoyed the friendship and achievement that came with it. At a young age her parents taught her how to ride a bicycle, and that simple gift became a source of real independence and freedom that she enjoyed. She would ride all over Hickman, stopping to visit relatives and friends along the way.

In the early years at the Region V workshop, Melonie took great pride in her work. She wielded a heavy nail gun while building pallets for the Land and Sky Waterbed Company, and she was justifiably proud of every sturdy pallet she helped create.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to all the staff—past and present—of Apace who cared for Melonie with patience, love, kindness, and genuine affection over so many years. Their dedication and the community of Crete, Nebraska made an immeasurable difference in her life. We are also deeply grateful to the AseraCare and Bryan West Hospice nurses for the compassionate end-of-life care they provided.

Melonie was preceded in death by her parents, Marvin Allen Moser Sr. and Carmen (Dykmann) Moser. She is survived by her brothers, Marvin Allen Moser Jr., his wife Madeleine, and William Moser and his wife Kathy; her sister Jeanne Thornton and husband Christopher; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Melonie’s life was marked by joy in simple pleasures, and an open heart. Those who knew her will remember her smile, her songs, and the way she lit up whenever family was near. May her memory encourage continued kindness toward all who need extra support and leaves behind the lasting imprint of a spirit that was cherished, protected, and celebrated every step of the way.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, October 2, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Kuncl Funeral Home in Crete. Memorials are in care of the family for future designation to Apace. Arrangements entrusted to Kuncl Funeral Home in Crete.
