Obituary

Michele "Mickey" Dawn (Morgan) VanDyke was born in Portland, Oregon on April 4, 1942. She died on February 14, 2022.

Mickey grew up in Superior, NE and graduated from Holdrege High School. Following graduation, she moved to Omaha to attend business college. Following graduation, she moved back to Holdrege, and was employed at the city offices. It was in Holdrege where she and Steve VanDyke started dating, and then got married on June 23, 1962. Mickey and Steve moved to Lincoln, as Steve finished school at the University of Nebraska. In August 1965, Steve and Mickey moved to Crete when Steve started teaching at Crete High School. Mickey had a 29-year career in the Wanek's of Crete carpet department, and then an 11 year career at the Doane College library.

She was a lover of life and her personality always filled a room. She was quick to laugh and give hugs, and she never met a stranger. Mickey was a competitive bridge player and had several groups she played with regularly. Her social calendar was always filled with activities and she was the first to jump in to volunteer her time in the community.   Mickey loved with all her heart, and was a very proud parent and grandparent, and friends always knew what was happening with her family. Her family will forever remember the overwhelming love she gave freely and liberally, and her creativity and hospitality bubbled over to all who entered her home. Mickey's love of music was strong and she always had a song in her heart.

Mickey is preceded in death by her parents Don Morgan and Hazel Morgan Lilyhorn. She will be deeply missed by her husband of 59 years Steve VanDyke of Crete, NE. Also grieving her loss are her children Deb (Paul) VanDyke-Ries of Lincoln, NE, Kelly (Thad) Dodd of Lincoln, NE, and Steve (Jennifer) VanDyke of Glenwood Springs, CO. Grandchildren are Sidney, Quinn, and Maison VanDyke-Ries, McKenna and Madison Dodd, and Thea and Sophia VanDyke. Celebrating her life is her sister, Mary (Roger Will) Saxton of Burlington, IA. Mickey is also survived by extended family and countless friends.

The family invites all who remember Mickey to celebrate her life on February 18, 2022 at 1pm at the United Church of Christ, First Congregational Church in Crete. Because Mickey was a voracious reader, the family requests memorials sent to the Crete or Doane Libraries, or to the United Church of Christ, First Congregational Church where she was an active member.

Arrangements entrusted to Kuncl Funeral Home in Crete, NE.
