Obituary

Milo "Mike" Joseph Shestak, age 84, passed away peacefully at his home in Western, Nebraska on October 26, 2025.  He was born November 14, 1940, in Lincoln, Nebraska to Joseph Shestak and Frances (Belohlavy) later Kohel.

Mike grew up in the Wilber area and attended Wilber Public Schools, graduating with the Class of 1959.  Throughout his life, Mike worked in several trades–spending years on the road as a truck driver, laboring in construction, and farming the land.

In 1962, Mike married Betty Jiskra, and together they raised four children: Kris (Kevin) Kowalski, Kirk (Crystal) Shestak, Kim (Dan) Zwingman, and Kip (Kristal) Shestak.  Mike was a proud grandfather to: Paige (Derek) Golden, Sydney (Karl) Brennecke, Decker Shestak, Garrett (Erin) Kowalski, Wyatt (Sophie) Kowalski, Cassidy (Mitchel) Whittington, Kayton Zwingman, John Zwingman, Gentry Zwingman, Kooper Shestak, and Kolbie Shestak.  He was also blessed to welcome three great-grandchildren into the world.

Before Mike was wheelchair bound he enjoyed spending time with his cows and before that he enjoyed riding and raising horses. Mike loved music, especially an old country song or a good polka tune.  He cherished watching Molly B, rodeos and RFD.  He also found peace watching birds from his favorite chair beside the picture window.  Those quiet moments brought him great joy.  Just as meaningful were the visits from neighbors, family, and longtime friends who would stop by to share stories, laughter, and companionship.  Those visits brought him comfort, conversation, and connection–something he deeply cherished.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Frances (Belohlavy) Kohel; father, Joseph Shestak; and stepfather Anton "Tony" Kohel.

Mike will be remembered for his spirit, his humor, his love of polka music, and the warmth he shared with those who sat and visited with him.  His legacy lives on through his family and the many people whose lives were brightened by knowing him.

Graveside Services will be held on Friday, November 28, 2025, at 11:00 AM at the Wilber Czech Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to Kuncl Funeral Home in Wilber.
