Obituary

Naomi Viola was born to Benjamin and Emma (Petermeyer) Offer on a farm in Lancaster County on July 23, 1914. She began studying piano when she was 5 and changed to violin before going to high school, so she could participate in the school orchestra. During high school she taught violin, studied violin at Doane College and, at the age of 14, played first chair violin in the Doane orchestra. Upon graduation from Hickman High School, she moved to Lincoln where she took classes at the Lincoln School of Commerce and played in Dorothy Holcomb's String Ensemble for weekly Sunday vesper services at the Cornhusker Hotel. During that time she met Victor Schwaninger who sang a solo at an event where she played the violin. Their mutual love of music drew them together. They were married in 1941. Their lives centered around farming and music. Vic was the church choir director and Naomi played the church organ. They were blessed with two daughters, Elaine, in 1942 and Lanyce in 1947. They gradually grew their farming business, expanding the dairy herd to 40-50 cows, building a new barn and employing a hired man. In 1957, Vic died at the age of 39, two days after a caterpillar accident. Elaine was 15 and Lanyce was 9. Naomi's blind mother was also her responsibility, having lost her husband, Naomi's dad, 11 months earlier.

Naomi moved the family to Crete where she took "How to teach Piano" courses at Doane College and at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. She began teaching piano in 1958. In 1960, Naomi moved to Hickman where she continued to teach piano. Then, in 1970, Lou Moser, a neighbor from the Hallam farm who had lost his wife years earlier, called Naomi for a date. After a brief courtship, they married in the fall of 1970. Both thoroughly enjoyed living on Lou's farm with a lilac and yellow rose-lined lane. They also enjoyed dancing, playing cards and traveling. After Lou's death in 1978, Naomi returned to Crete, where she lived until her death.

Thinking back on her life, Naomi said she enjoyed her forty years of teaching piano, especially teaching double piano where she had four students playing at the same time. She was proud of the conservation work she did on the farms, "witching" and putting down wells, tiling in the 1950's and constructing several ponds. Other fond memories included being church organist and playing violin, piano or organ for numerous weddings, funerals, anniversaries, often accompanying Vic who sang solos. She also enjoyed traveling in the United States, Alaska, Europe, the Bahamas and Canada.

Throughout her adult life, Naomi was active in clubs and organizations including Hallam and Kramer Extension clubs, Columbia Club, Crete Retired Teachers Association, Crete Women's Club, and the Crete Senior Citizen Group. She was active in multiple church women's associations, attending international meetings of Presbyterian women at Purdue, Indiana and of Methodist women in Louisville, Kentucky.
