Wilma Jean (Riley) Vergith, 84, a longtime resident of Crete, passed away Tuesday, January 31, in Lincoln. Born July 4, 1932 in Dardanelle, Arkansas to Ashley and Iva Phillips. United in marriage to Vernon Riley on December 7, 1951. From this union, 11 children were born: Rick (Shirley) Riley - Lincoln, Ron (Kathy) Riley - Lincoln, John (Charles Meng) Riley - Switzerland, Mary (Brad) Koch - Crete, Jerry Riley - Lincoln, Patti Gould - Crete, Dan (Amy) Riley - Lincoln, Linda (Wayne) Broman - Fairmont, Tod (Lisa) Riley - York, Lisa (Doug) Johnson - Hickman, and Jenni (Bob) Lee - Hollywood, South Carolina. Following Vernon's death in 1969, Jean was united in marriage to Elvin Vergith in 1979.
Jean was a homemaker who loved sports. A former Arkansas All-State basketball champion, Jean enjoyed attending sporting events of her children and grandchildren. In her later years, she enjoyed trips to the casino and watching all sports on TV, especially NBA games.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, and 6 siblings.
She is survived by her 11 children, 24 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, 4 siblings, 3 sisters in law, and nieces and nephews.
Services: Saturday, 10:30 am, Kuncl Funeral Home, Crete. Interment: Riverside Cemetery, Crete. Visitation: Friday, 5 – 8 pm, funeral home. Memorials to the American Heart Association. Kuncl Funeral Home in Crete is in charge of arrangements.
